Friends in the Snow

Friends in the Snow

Last November I received a call from a friend who was in my class in high school, she was looking to do a photo shoot with a few of her nursing friends who had just graduated from nursing school. So one snowy day I made my way out to her new home to photograph these four beautiful and smart ladies. They had clothes scattered everywhere with several outfit changes in mind. Although they looked cute I did feel sorry for…

Sarah Wolfs Show Jumping

Sarah Wolfs Show Jumping

Last October I had the pleasure of accompanying Sarah Wolfs to the Oktoberfest show jumping competition at Spruce Meadows in Calgary. Her horse Denny was unfortunately suffering from some pain and kept refusing to jump the higher jumps while she was actually showing, however he would tackle some of the lower jumps while practicing. And let me say, together they looked magnificent flying through the air. Here are a few frames from that shoot.   I used my Canon 7D camera…

Higher and Higher- Queen Of Hearts

Higher and Higher- Queen Of Hearts

Last minute phone calls from Justice Brooks about last minute photo shoots seem to be the new norm for our professional relationship. This time I found myself photographing the up-and-coming, seriously handsome men of a local Edmonton band, Higher and Higher. The band includes the ultra talented musicians — Robbie Mcweeny, Mack Greening, Riley Witiw, Derek L’Hirondelle, and Sean Torgalson. I had only heard of them before from Justice, who had shot a previous music video of theirs, but whilst my…

Amy Andrew

Amy Andrew

A road trip up to Red Deer, Alta. to visit my good friend Justice Brooks ended up with getting hooked into a photo-shoot featuring Zaffar Hassan’s red Subaru WRX STI and a very fluid, sexy, and professional model Amy Andrew. After spending a couple hours in the morning scouting for locations and drinking our fill of caffeine, we were off with Zaffar and Amy to the first location to capture both motion and still footage. Four hours later after the last of…

Hillhurst/ West Hillhurst Portrait Project

Hillhurst/ West Hillhurst Portrait Project

I must say, this is embarrassingly late. As a final project for a portrait class we were given an assignment to cover one community in Calgary and to make a portrait of a stranger every week for nine weeks to show what that community is like and the kind of people who work and live in the area. I was drawn the communities of Hillhurst and West Hillhurst which worked perfectly for me as they run just south of SAIT…

Justice Brooks | Patrick Cahoon

Justice Brooks | Patrick Cahoon

Upon request, I was guided through the prison-esque architecture that plays home to the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD), and brought to the uttermost back, dark and dingy corner of the building. Among the struggles of carrying around 10 camera bags which held the video cameras, tripods and my own lights and camera which easily weighed a combined 500lbs (give or take), up and down several flights of stairs, and pushing our way through a throng of artists searching for…

Domestic Violence Illustration

Domestic Violence Illustration

Our last major assignment for our lighting class was to come up with and photograph an editorial illustration. My first thought was getting married to young and divorce, however that plan fell through so I called upon a favour from my friend Kaleigh Johnson and we did a quick 30 minute photo shoot with the theme of domestic violence. Kaleigh did her makeup to make it look like she had a black eye and she posed for me herself for…

Marie Ellis

Marie Ellis

My granny, Florence Alice Marie Ellis, is the strongest woman I know. She raised my dad up to be a good hard working man, she drove my mom the right amount of crazy when she married my dad, and she played a major role in raising me with good values and just the right amount of tenderness and toughness. She is the kindest lady I know and will help you with anything if you need only ask. Last week I…

Nicole Ellis- Pianist

Nicole Ellis- Pianist

This past week I was home for reading week and I photographed my beautiful sister playing the piano for one of my lighting assignments. The assignment was to photograph portraits of the same person using Broad, Short, and Butterfly lighting. The shoot was fairly fun and most of the time Nicole was actually playing the piano, she’s very talented. I was having a bit of a difficult time because the pocket wizards I was using to fire my flashes weren’t…

Betty Larsen

Betty Larsen

This is Betty Larsen and her six-year-old mare Molly. I asked Betty if I could take her photograph a couple weekends back and she kindly obliged, even though it was about -35 with windchill. My mom has worked for Betty cleaning her house for a number of years and when I was really young, before I was even in school or during the summers when I was in school, I would go to Betty’s house and help “clean” with my…
